This is a project I completed a while ago and it’s currently featured in the latest issue of PaintWorks Magazine.
The box is a small butterfly box from Valhalla Designs. I started by covering the entire box with variegated metal leaf from Houston Art but realized I’m not partial to bright, shiny things. I washed the metal leaf with green to tone down the shine then added paint around the bottom and a layer of Frescolina or drywall compound to the top..
The painting of the design was actually the easiest part. I basecoated the Frescolina then added layers of color to build up the fruit, then used sandpaper to remove some of the highspots in the design.
